Located on the Garhwal Himalayan Range in the Rudraprayag District, Kedarnath is one of the most sacred temples and the holiest Hindu pilgrimages in India. A part of Chhota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, Kedarnath is the most important among the 12 Jyotirlingas in India dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kedarnath Temple can only be reached from Gaurikund through a trek and remains open only for six months from April to November, due to heavy snowfall in the region the rest of the months.

During the winters from November to May, the diety is shifted from Kedarnath Temple to ukhimath and is worshipped there. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva, the protector, and the destroyer, and it's believed that a journey to Kedarnath provides one "Moksha" or salvation. Set amidst the snow-clad mountains near Chorabari Glacier with Mandakini River flowing in front of it, Kedarnath witnesses lakhs of devotees every year due to its religious significance.

The present Kedarnath Temple is believed to be re-constructed by Adi Shankaracharya, initially built by the Pandavas thousand years ago from enormous stone slabs over a large rectangular dais.

Kedarnath Yatra is a spiritual pilgrimage in India that takes devotees to the Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand. The route map for this yatra begins from Delhi and goes through cities like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and finally, Gaurikund, which is the starting point of the trek to Kedarnath. From Gaurikund, devotees have to trek for around 16 km to reach the Kedarnath Temple, which is located at an altitude of 3583 meters above sea level.

The trek involves a challenging climb through rocky terrain and steep slopes, but the stunning views of the Himalayas and the tranquil surroundings make it a rewarding experience. The Kedarnath Temple is one of the four sacred shrines in India and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Kedarnath Yatra is usually conducted from May to November and draws thousands of devotees every year.

Health Advisory
The sacred places such as Kedarnath Dham in Uttarakhand are situated at elevated heights. Visiting all these places of worship could subject the devotees to severe frigidity, decreased moisture in the air, heightened ultraviolet radiation, and diminished air and oxygen levels.

YatraZone recommends the following Tips for a Pleasant and Secure Yatra Experience:-

  • Before embarking on the Yatra, it is advisable for all pilgrims to ensure they are in good health by undergoing a thorough medical check-up.
  • Those with pre-existing medical conditions should bring an adequate supply of their prescribed medications, along with their physician’s contact information and prescriptions.
  • Senior citizens, individuals with comorbidities, and those who have had COVID-19 in the past may want to consider postponing or foregoing the pilgrimage.
  • Pack warm, woolen clothing and be mindful of the risks associated with high altitudes for those with heart conditions, respiratory issues, diabetes, and hypertension. If symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, or increased heart rate occur, seek immediate medical attention or contact the 104 or 108 helplines.

It is also important to avoid alcohol, drugs, and smoking, protect your skin with SPF 50 sunscreen and sunglasses, stay well-hydrated, take frequent breaks during treks, and avoid strenuous exercise at high altitudes. In case of emergencies, the Helpline numbers [108 – National Ambulance Service and 104- Uttarakhand Health Helpline] can be contacted.

Famous for the ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, it tenders an unflustered ambiance with its colorful rhododendron woods, snow-covered mountains, and splendid sights of nature. This sacred city is visited by thousands of tourists from all over to seek the blessing of the lord and scout the undulating scenery of this region at an elevation of 11,755 ft above sea level. Almost all the appeals nestled in higher altitudes render every bystander a fascinating and enchanting feeling. An amalgamation of devoutness and adventure is what makes it peerless and unique.

The legend has it that after the battle of Kurukshetra, Pandavas of Mahabharata went on a journey to Varanasi to seek blessings from the Lord as they were guilty of killing their kith and kin. However, Lord Shiva avoided meeting them, thus hiding himself in Guptakashi. When Pandavas found him, Lord Shiva decided to take the form of a buffalo so that they couldn't recognize him. Seeing them coming closer Lord decided to become invisible by going underground. While doing that one of the five Pandavas, Bhima made a great effort to stop him by holding on to the legs and tail of the bull. Unfortunately, the Lord dived and evaporated at that place leaving behind his hump which is now worshipped at Kedarnath Temple.

Seek blessings of Lord Shiva and do your prayers,
Enjoy beautiful morning view, have your breakfast.
