Short Detail About Chardham

Badrinath: The picturesque town of Badrinath is where divinity meets with the serenity of nature. Located in the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand at a height of 3,133 meters, the pre-eminent abode of Lord Vishnu is one of the holiest of the holy shrines of Char Dham pilgrimage in India. Badrinath Dham is easily accessible by motorable roads and the Badrinath temple can be reached by walking along an easy trek. Around 3 km from Badrinath is the village of Mana, which is one of the last villages before the boundary of India ends and that of Tibet begins. The peak of Neelkanth stands strong spreading its mighty aura for all pilgrims and travellers alike.

Badrinath is a land of myriad legends, each one only adding to the glory of this place. Along with these legends, the snowy mountain peaks, gracefully flowing Alaknanda River, and incredible landscapes create the perfect background to facilitate a spiritual connection.

Badrinath is located at an elevation of around 3,100 m. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, on the banks of the Alaknanda River, this sacred town lies between Nar and Narayana mountain ranges. The temple is believed to have been established by sage Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. With Lord Vishnu as its presiding deity, the temple remains open for six months in a year. In winter it becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.

1): A holy town; part of the Char Dham Yatra
2): Scenic Himalayan vistas
3): Natural wonders like hot springs
4): Where history and mythology come alive

Best Time To Visit: The ideal time to visit Badrinath Temple is from May to October. The temple is closed from October/ November and is reopened around April.

Kedarnath: Among the glorious mountain peaks that are covered with nothing but snowstorms, lies one of the holiest pilgrim sites of northern India -"Kedarnath". Famous for the ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, it tenders an unflustered ambiance with its colorful rhododendron woods, snow-covered mountains, and splendid sights of nature. This sacred city is visited by thousands of tourists from all over to seek the blessing of the lord and scout the undulating scenery of this region at an elevation of 11,755 ft above sea level. Almost all the appeals nestled in higher altitudes render every bystander a fascinating and enchanting feeling. An amalgamation of devoutness and adventure is what makes it peerless and unique.

The legend has it that after the battle of Kurukshetra, Pandavas of Mahabharata went on a journey to Varanasi to seek blessings from the Lord as they were guilty of killing their kith and kin. However, Lord Shiva avoided meeting them, thus hiding himself in Guptakashi. When Pandavas found him, Lord Shiva decided to take the form of a buffalo so that they couldn't recognize him. Seeing them coming closer Lord decided to become invisible by going underground. While doing that one of the five Pandavas, Bhima made a great effort to stop him by holding on to the legs and tail of the bull. Unfortunately, the Lord dived and evaporated at that place leaving behind his hump which is now worshipped at Kedarnath Temple.

Best time to visit: May - June and Mid-Sept - Oct, Area: Garhwal Himalaya,  Altitude: 3553 mt.

Gangotri: Gangotri, the origin of the River Ganges and seat of the goddess Ganga, is one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage of Uttarakhand. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga (the Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda. The origin of the holy river is at Gomukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.

Gangotri Dham, located at the height of 3,100 meters (approx.) on the Himalayan range in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, holds a very special place in the hearts of Hindus. It is one of the four sacred and important pilgrimage sites of Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Amid all the natural beauty and grace which the mountains and altitude of the place affords, what makes Gangotri one of the holiest places is its intimate connection with River Ganga (the Ganges).

Ganga Maa (mother), the much revered deity of Hindus, originates from the Gangotri glacier at Gaumukh which is some 18 km from the Gangotri town. It is said that Goddess Ganga came to earth in order to wash away the sins of King Bhagirathi's ancestors. From the folds of mythology till the present time, Ganga River has always been a sacred source of purity for the mankind. Coming to Gangotri for a religious tour is not only a religious duty but a spiritual calling too.

Devotees will be able to perform the pilgrimage to Gangotri Dham from May 10, 2024, the auspicious day of Akshay Tritya. The best time to visit the Gangotri temple is from April/May to June and September to October/November.  Monsoons bring a very real danger of landslides, floods and other problems while winters are characterized with heavy snow and freezing temperatures.

Yamunotri: On the western side of Garhwal Himalayas, in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, lies the holy place of Yamunotri. About 3,293 metres above the sea level, Yamunotri stands proudly with its enormous mountain peaks, glaciers and gushing waters of Yamuna. River Yamuna, the second most sacred river of India, originates in Yamunotri, making it one of the pilgrimage sites in the Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand.

The venerated goddess Yamuna is said to be the daughter of Sun and twin sister of Yama (the god of death); in Vedas, Yamuna is called Yami (lady of life). A bath in the sanctified waters of Yamuna is said to cleanse all sins and protect from untimely or painful death. Such strong associations in Hindu mythology place Yamuna Devi (goddess) in high ranks of divinity.

Every Year Chardham Yatra begins from the month of April or May onwards and continues until October/November as the doors of all four temples (Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yumunotri & Gangotri) remain open till the day of “Diwali Festival” which is celebrated every year during the month the month of October/November. “Diwali festival –Also called Deepawali” is considered as one of the main festival of Hindus and dates of this festival to be decided by the holy saints/Gurus/Priests according to Hindu calendar). After Diwali doors of all temples remain close for the next five or six months due to heavy snow fall and very cold weather as all these temples are located in the remote places of Himalayan Mountain where life is not easy to survive due to uncertain weather conditions.

Chardham Yatra is considered is as one of the toughest Yatra in Himalayan region, so don’t take it lightly as one should physically and mentally fit to travel this circuit. There are three token counters near taxi stand at Badrinath. You can collect your token (free) from one of these counters. Token mentions darshan time and you need to be at the main door 10 – 15 minutes in advance. Please note that time allotted for darshan of the Lord Badrinath is only for 10 – 20 seconds in the peak season of May to July.

The token system was started in 2012 as a 10 day trial, but with its great success it has been continued for the Char Dham 2012 season. With the token system there is no need for pilgrims to stand in long queues for several hours outside the temple, and pilgrims now visit other nearby spots in the time which was otherwise going waste.
